Project notice for PHYS 153
As mentioned in class and in the syllabus, there is more required of you than
the tests, homework, and final exam.
A project (for lack of a better name). Put together something tangible to
use as a demonstration of optics. Examples include: a water prism made
from of Lucite, a periscope, a kaleidoscope, a rear projection screen,
polarization demonstration, etc. There are also a number things that could be
done with a camera similar to examples in the text and especially
involving color films. These include a study of color film, reciprocity, stereo
images, depth of field vs. aperture setting, etc. Digital imaging provides a particularly fertile area
as does video.
The presentation. Finally, you will
present the project to the class in a brief (approximately 10 minute)
demonstration complete with explanation. It is expected that you will be well prepared and will
present a polished discourse.
You should choose a reasonable topic by early September. Your text contains many suggestions. Consult your professor before making your final
choice. Stop by to speak face to face or at least communicate via e-mail. Please do not just bring up
a topic at the end of a class period expecting approval. Instead allow for a few minutes with your
instructor so that both of you can evaluate the proposed project together.
Failure to make a choice will result in an assigned topic.
Presentations will begin in late September. Presentation times will be assigned and must
be adhered to. Students will be asked to participate in judging the presentations.
We will discuss the criteria in class.
Use your creativity to do something; do not just make a library report. Your instructor can help you
to prepare transparencies, etc., as well as to guide you in preparing for the presentation. You should
discuss your presentation with your teacher before you come to present it.
