Physics 101 Laboratory Policy
Spring 2007

Laboratory Assistants:

Lab assistants have not yet been assigned for Spring 2006.

All labs are required and there will be no makeup labs except for very special circumstances. One free cut is allowed. If a student completes all labs, the lowest grade will be dropped.

Students must have:
1) Laboratory manual: Experiments in How Things Work, E.R. Jones, Christine Gibson, & Joseph Kovaz (Raleigh, NC: Contemporary Publ. Co, 2003)
2) An 8.5" x 11" science/engineering-ruled spiral notebook. This notebook will provide all the graph paper needed for the laboratory.

Students should complete their work within the time period of the laboratory. They should fill in and tear out the appropriate data/work sheets in the laboratory manual, combine their work with the necessary graphs and turn everything in to the instructor at the end of the period. The work will be graded and returned to the students at the beginning of the next laboratory period.

Lab grading: Instructor will give a letter grade for each experiment according to the following scheme. Each higher grade presumes sastisfactory attainment for the requirements of the grades below it.

A. Excellent presentation of results, including graphs and analysis where appropriate, and a demonstration of a real understanding of the experiment, such as commenting on the limitations of the experiment as well as the unavoidable errors in measurements. Conclusion drawn on the basis of the observed data and analysis.
B. Acceptable interpretation of data and observations to satisfy all objectives of the experiment. Presentation complete, indicating that all parts of the experiment were successfully performed. Active participation in the laboratory work and in the analysis.
C. Completion of the lab assignment including recording of data. Active participation in the experiment.
D. Barely adequate performance of the experiment.
F. Inadequate performance of the experiment.
0. Unexcused absence.
