Goals -- Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, PHYS 501, the students will be able to:
• solve the differential equation for the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator,
  
• solve the one-dimensional Schroedinger equation in special cases,
• gain some understanding of the use of the Fourier Series expansion
• derive the eigenstates of the one-dimensional finite square well potential,
• understand the basic physics principles of the Heisenberg uncertainty relation.
  

Requirements and Grading

• REQUIREMENTS:
  • Homework assignments handed in on time.
  • Quizzes -- Four 10-15 min. in class quizzes are planned.
  • One test:
    • Around Fall Break (date to be announced in class and on the Assignments webpage)
      
  • Final Exam (Comprehensive),
• GRADING:
  • Your overall score will be calculated as follows:
    • Homework: 10%
    • Quizzes: 20%
    • Mid-term Test: 30%
    • Final Exam: 40%
  • Electronic devices cannot be used during exams and quizzes.
  • Mid-term test and the final exam will be based on the material discussed in class, homework assignments, quizzes, and any assigned problems and/or readings.
  • You may obtain help in solving homework assignments.
  • Graduate students will be given more challenging homework problems and an extra problem on the test and/or the final exam.
• GRADING SCALE:
  • A:100-88   B:87-76   C:75-63    D:62-50.
