Homework

Homework problem sets will be posted on a weekly basis and will be due as designated. For changes and updates go to Homework. Your homework grade will count towards 20% of your course score. You will be allowed to volunteer for additional homework.

Reading Assignments and Quizzes

The chapters covered in class should be read prior to the lecture. Up to ten short quizzes will be typically given on Mondays. They are intended to keep your reading up to date. Each quiz comprises questions of the recent lectures and the reading assignment. For quizzes, changes, and updates go to Homework. Your average quiz grade will count towards 15% of your course score.

Tests and Comprehensive Exam

Two tests will be given that comprise conceptual questions as well as problem solving questions. Each test will count towards 15% of your course score. The last exam is comprehensive and will cover all Essentials of Physics 212 to date. All students have to take the comprehensive exam. It will count towards 25% of your course score. The test and exam days are all scheduled in advance, therefore, there is NO MAKEUP FOR MISSED EXAMS. Smart electronic devices are not allowed during the tests and the final exam!
Tests: 9/29 Thursday and 10/27 Thursday.

Attendance and Participation

Lecture and recitation attendance are mandatory. Unexcused absence is not allowed and will lower your class participation score, see USC's Attendance Policy . Your participation in class will count towards 10% of your course score. Absence from more than 15% of the scheduled class sessions will lead to a grade reduction of the same magnitude.

Bonus

Creativity is highly encouraged. Any useful enrichment and addition to the course will be honored.

Grading Formula and Scale

Course Score = 0.2*H + 0.15*Q + 0.3*(T1+T2)/2 + 0.25*CE + 0.1*AP + 0.25*B
H, Q, T1, T2, F, AP, and B are based on a 100 point scale.

The following grading scheme is used: A (≥ 90%), B+ (86%-89%), B (80%-85%), C+ (76%-79%), C (70%-75%), D+ (60%-69%), D (50%-59%), and F (< 50%).
