Tenure-Track Assistant Professor Position in Astronomy/Astrophysics
University of South Carolina

College of Arts & Sciences

Department of Physics and Astronomy

The University of South Carolina invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in astronomy/astrophysics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy to begin August 16, 2009.  We are especially interested in extragalactic astronomy and observational cosmology, but also encourage applications from persons working in planetary, stellar, or galactic astrophysics.

The University of South Carolina is the flagship university in South Carolina, with an enrollment of about 27,300 students at the main campus located in the beautiful capital city of Columbia (metropolitan population about 500,000) at the confluence of two major rivers.  The Department of Physics and Astronomy consists of 25 faculty members working in astrophysics, condensed matter physics, particle physics, nuclear physics, and quantum physics.  The astrophysics-related work in the department includes areas such as distant galaxies, quasar absorption lines, interstellar/intergalactic matter, solar neutrinos, and grava-stars.  This position is part of an effort to grow the astronomy/astrophysics research in the department.  Further information about the department may be found at http://www.physics.sc.edu.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate astronomy courses, as well as establish an internationally competitive research program involving students in research.  A PhD in astronomy/astrophysics with postdoctoral experience is required.  The applicant should have a demonstrated research record.  A record in attracting funding will be beneficial.

Candidates are requested to submit in confidence a curriculum vitae, selected reprints, summaries of research plans and teaching philosophy, and arrange to have a minimum of three letters of recommendation sent to the following address:  Astronomy/Astrophysics Search Committee, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of South Carolina, 712 Main Street, Columbia, SC 29208.  Further inquiries may be directed to Prof. Varsha P. Kulkarni (kulkarni@sc.edu).  For full consideration, applications must be received by January 15, 2009.
